Bringing Live Energy into the Studio
There really is nothing that compares with singing with a full orchestra in front of a live audience.
It starts as a collaboration with the musicians – turning notes on a page into a seamless performance that breathes and flows from one beat to the next, in a world where one plus one is definitely more than two. But then you add in the energy of a live audience, combining the risk (and excitement) of performing “without a net” with the thrill of knowing that each performance is completely unique. When you step out on the stage with the music playing and your heart racing – there’s really nothing like it.

And that’s also why recording an album like AMERICA: 250 Years Young can be such a challenge.
When I’m in the studio, I can’t “feel” the music with the musicians; I’m working with a recording that is always exactly the same. There is no audience to interact with, just an empty space (or wall) with a microphone. The energy and excitement that’s so vital to vibrant performance? It has no where to come from but you.
For me, the key is letting the experience of the live performance shape what happens in the studio. For AMERICA: 250 Years Young I spent hours running the arrangements in my mind – as if I was singing them live – and then making micro-adjustments to the playback tracks not just for notes and pitch, but for attitude – trying to capture the friction and fire that only happens when musicians play together.
Music isn’t a solitary act, but rather a conversation. When I perform live the conversation happens in real time. But in the studio, I only start the conversation; it isn’t finished until you press “play” and listen. The challenge, then, is to bottle up the energy of a live performance so that you can take it with you, whether at a backyard BBQ or driving down the highway.
In the end, I’m a better studio performer because of the energy and excitement I feel when singing live. And I’m a better live singer because of the discipline and awareness needed to sing in a studio. Whether you’re listening through headphones or joining me at a live event this summer, I hope you can hear the heartbeat of this project in every track.
